TROOP 62 CAMPING PHILOSOPHY
TROOP 62 CAMPING PHILOSOPHY :
The purpose of the Boy Scouting program is “to aid a boy in the process of developing into a young man. The principles contained in the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan express the major purposes of Scouting; the development of CHARACTER, CITIZENSHIP and FITNESS. The goal of every Scout is to advance through the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, and, finally, to the rank of Eagle Scout. The requirements for each rank are designed to challenge mentally, physically, and morally. We believe in the BSA philosophy of developing a young man's leadership skills by providing him opportunities to plan, organize and execute troop and patrol activities. We also believe that the best method of achieving these goals is through the Boy Scout outdoor camping program.
Although in today's video game, electronic society, camping is becoming a “lost art, it remains one of the most creative, educational experiences and is critical to the physical, mental, spiritual and social growth of our Scouts. In addition, camping:
- Contributes to good physical and mental health through supervised activities, fun, and companionship in a wholesome environment.
- Aids in spiritual growth by teaching an appreciation of the handiwork of God in nature.
- Contributes to a boy's social development by providing experiences in teach them to deal practically and effectively with adults and with their peers.
- Reinforces citizenship by providing a medium for democratic participation in decision-making, and by teaching the value of community.
- Develops self-confidence, self-reliance and resourcefulness through the acquisition of knowledge, skills, and attitudes essential to their well-being.
Troop 62's camping program is designed to include both long term and short term camps in a variety of sizes, locations, and skill abilities. We attempt to have one outing every month of the year. Within the bounds of safety, we do not let the weather dictate when we camp. Our normal campouts are scheduled for two nights, generally leaving after school on Friday and returning late Sunday morning. We encourage the boys to participate in every available camping opportunity and require regular participation for leadership credit and rank advancement.
